Why Room-by-Room Organization Works
Most replacement guides organize by item type: all the safety items together, all the kitchen items together, all the auto items together. That makes sense for browsing, but it does not match how you actually maintain your home. You do not walk through your house thinking about "safety items." You walk through your kitchen, your bathroom, your garage. The maintenance tasks live in the rooms, not in categories.
These cards reorganize replacement timelines by location. When you open the cabinet under the kitchen sink, the card taped inside the door tells you everything in that room and when it needs attention. When you walk into the garage on a Saturday morning, the card on the wall reminds you to test the garage door opener auto-reverse and check the fire extinguisher pressure gauge.
The format is intentionally simple. Each card lists the item, when to replace it, how often to check it, and the warning signs that mean it needs attention now. No lengthy explanations on the card itself. If you want the full details, every item links to its dedicated page on this site with the complete science, sourcing, and recommendations.
How to Use These Cards
Print the cards for the rooms you use most. Tape or pin each card in a visible location within that room: inside a cabinet door, on the side of the refrigerator, on the garage wall near the door to the house, or inside the utility closet. The goal is to see the card regularly without it being in the way.
Twice a year, ideally when you change your clocks for daylight saving time or at the start of spring and fall, walk through each room with the card and check every item listed. This takes less than an hour for most homes and catches problems before they become emergencies or safety hazards.
For families with children, the nursery and kids room card is particularly important. Car seats expire, safety gates weaken, crib mattresses degrade, and children's helmets need regular inspection. These items protect your most vulnerable family members, and their replacement timelines are often shorter than you would expect.
Frequently Asked Questions
The current version generates pre-built cards with the most common items for each room. If your home has items not listed (such as a water softener in the basement or a pool chemical storage area in the garage), you can print the card and add items by hand. We plan to add customization options in a future update.
Each card is designed to fit on a standard 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper. Use your browser's print function and select the cards you want. Each card has a page break so it prints cleanly on its own page. For a more durable card, print on cardstock or laminate the printed page.
